The cast comes out before the play begins, chit-chats to spectators and draws a map of Middletown on the stage floor. A deeply moving and funny new play that explores the universe of a small American town. But then really just have people going to synlpsis store and fixing the sink and going through the normal things of looking for love and getting up in the morning.
However, there are several intimate scenes that do work beautifully.
It’s that of Beckett and Chekhov. Somewhere in the middle. In the extraordinary second act, despair arrives center stage as Mary, John, the mechanic, and the cop suddenly face soul-wrenching grief. The tourist trap is a panic-inducing labyrinth of light, sound, and smells.
